Gulmarg literally means “Meadow of flowers”. Gulmarg is located 60 KMs away from Srinagar which is an hour and half journey by car. Gulmarg has attracted millions of tourists throughout its existence with the scenic beauty of the Himalayan Mountains in the back drop. Gulmarg is a picturesque town with glimmering snow peaked Himalayan alps, rich green pastures and pine covered snow slopes. The winter snow land transforms into a beautiful landscape of vibrant blooming flowers in riot of colours during the autumn season. Gulmarg is the crowning glory of Jammu & Kashmir and is located 2,650 meters above sea level. It boasts of the world's highest golf-course.
Tangmarg is a famous stopover on the way to Gulmarg. Lying about 13 km from the town of Gulmarg and 39 km from Srinagar, it sits on a lower slope of the Pir Panjal range. Visitors can also traverse a 5 km trek to reach Gulmarg from here. Tangmarg is famous for fresh cold water, heavy snowfall, and tourism. Tangmarg is a hilly area with most parts covered by lush green forests. In the local language, Tangmarg means the place with many pear trees. During the Mughal Era in Kashmir, Tangmarg was the gateway to the hill-town of Gulmarg.
Drang, a beautiful village known as Veshvoke in Kashmiri language is located on the foothills of Gulmarg, and is approximately 3 km away from Tangmarg town or the national highway. This panoramic wonderland attracts millions of tourists every season. The towering waterfall, which merges with the water streams flowing from the glaciers, attracts a large number of tourists. The severity of the cold is such that in winter lakes, rivers, water bodies and waterfalls completely froze across the valley.
The name is a pseudonym of Baba Payam-ud-Din Reshi (R.A), a courtier of 15th century Kashmir King Zain-ul-Abidin. Also known as Baba Rishi or Babareshi, his “dargah” now is one of the major Sufi shrines of Kashmir. Baba Reshi is said to have been born in 1411 C.E. to a nobleman. The Ziarat of Baba Reshi is a popular shrine of Baramulla, situated near the Alpather Lake at 13 km from Gulmarg and belongs to saint Baba Payam-Din (R.A).
Bota Pathri, also spelled as Botapathri, is a meadow in Gulmarg. It is located at a distance of about 10 kilometers from the golf course area and was opened to tourists about a decade ago. The tourist spot Boota Pathri is also called the Nagin Valley, has been set open by the Tourism Department in May 2012. The destination had been closed to visitors a period of 22 years.
The surge in the tourists visiting Gulmarg resulted in it getting congested. Boota Pathri is a good place for the tourists to visit. It is a pristine place. The infrastructure over here is environment friendly, eco sensitive and is a new destination for the tourists
